COP 28 DUBAI

From the 30th of November till the 12th of December our director Anne-Marie Melster will participate in the COP 28 in Dubai to advocate for change and connect with other ocean scientists, activists and politicians.

As an Observer NGO we have the possibility to advocate and push for positive change. New connections and the chance to get the input from and exchange ideas with other like-minded people is really important for the work we are doing. It gives us the chance to spread our engagement and find ideas and partners for our future work. If you are also going to be at the COP 28, reach out to Anne-Marie for a meet-up (anne-marie.melster@artport-project.org).

We will be hosting an event at Ocean Pavilion in the Blue Zone, details will follow on our website and through social media. Our COP28 delegation apart from Anne-Marie consists of three representatives from New York University Abu Dhabi. NYU Abu Dhabi, notably their programs Elements of the Anthropocene in The Anthropocene: Urbanism, the Environment, and Sustainability Kitchen (https://sites.nyuad.nyu.edu/researchkitchens/aues/) invited Anne-Marie to organise a workshop with a selection of their students. The WE ARE OCEAN NYU Abu Dhabi workshop in collaboration with NYU Abu Dhabi scientists will happen on the 4th of December on their campus.

WE ARE OCEAN Mallorca+Mar Balear

Next year we will focus on the Mediterranean Sea: Our ambitious project WE ARE OCEAN Mallorca+Mar Balear will be happening in Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona, we are planning a multi-year-long program actually.

Our partners are Positive Lab, the Ona Futura Foundation, the Centro Oceanográfico de Baleares (COB), Instituto Español de Oceanografia (IEO), CONSEJO SUPERIOR DE INVESTIGACIONES CIENTIFICAS, The Port Authority Mallorca, Mallorca Preservation Fund, revolve magazine. The first onsite Ocean Decade Conference will take place in Barcelona in April 2024 and we will bring WE ARE OCEAN and particularly WE ARE OCEAN Mallorca+Mar Balear to the city, here partnering also with the ICM Instituto de Ciencias Marinas. We are really excited about this opportunity. The details about our program will be shared with you at the beginning of 2024.

RECAP 1: World Ocean Summit in Lisbon at the end of Fabruary

At the end of February this year our director Anne-Marie Melster was invited to the World Ocean Summit in Lisbon organized by The Economist. During her attendance she was able to meet new peers from the corporative, the non-profit, the research and the philanthropic fields, but also re-activated the contact to existing contacts. She attended inspiring events hosted for example by Lloyds Register Foundation and many other entities.

RECAP 3: WAO Berlin+Brandenburg Book & Book launch July 2023 in CLB Berlin

At the beginning of the year, we published our first book of the WE ARE OCEAN series: WE ARE OCEAN Berlin+Brandenburg, generously funded by the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie and their participants. It is a compilation of participant testimonials, articles by leading thinkers about art and climate change, and a documentation of the project held in 2019. If you are interested, you can buy it here: [https://www.lespressesdureel.com/EN/ouvrage.php?id=10315].

The CLB at Moritzplatz, Berlin was our kind host. We gathered a group of engaged and interested public. Anne-Marie Melster welcomed the author and project curator Julia Moritz. Elang Basadi, curator of ARTPORT_making waves for Botswana, was visually staging the book for this evening. The bar was curated by Julia Moritz, and Nick Nuttall, the former UN spokesperson for the Paris Climate Agreement 2015 and a member of our advisory board,  performed a few songs from his new album Just Because Some Bad Wind Blows, which was released on 5 May 2023.

RECAP 4: WE ARE OCEAN WADDEN SEA Denmark August 22nd

On the 22nd August we finally brought WE ARE OCEAN Wadden Sea to a conclusion by bringing it to the last country: Denmark. At Marsk Camp the German artist Insa Winkler guided the young participants from the two local schools, Ungdomsskolen from Ribe and the Toender Gymnasium, through a Wadden Sea sensing painting workshop. Surrounded by the impacting Wadden Sea nature accompanied by sun and rain, the young people were inspired to feel the Wadden Sea. This part of the program was kindly supported by The Lighthouse Foundation and the Stiftung Niedersachsen.

Together, they created a collective artwork guided by their senses!

Insa Winkler, the commissioned artist of WE ARE OCEAN Wadden Sea Denmark, unveiled the exciting workshop plan: merging Wadden Sea knowledge with artistic expression through painting and a collective art collage
